An ancient Chinese tradition that has conquered the world and is now a symbol of health, culture, and sophistication.

247 - Pu'er tea, also called Pu-erh, originated in Yunnan provinceYunnan, in southwestern China, is a region famous for its mountains, fertile valleys, and unique biodiversity. It is in Yunnan that some of the world's oldest tea trees are found, some over 800 years old, revered as true living treasures.

The town of Pu'er He gave the drink its name because it was the major trading post during the time when caravans traveled along the so-called "The tea and horse route"Connecting Yunnan to Tibet and, from there, to other regions of Asia, for centuries pressed blocks of tea were transported over long distances and traded for horses, essential for China's military defense. This trade transformed Pu'er into a symbol of prestige and wealth.

Kunming: the gateway to Yunnan

No narrative about the Pu'er would be complete without mentioning KunmingKunming, the capital of Yunnan and one of the historical and contemporary centers of the tea route. Known as the "city of eternal spring" for its mild climate throughout the year, Kunming played a strategic role as a convergence point for trade routes that departed from the province towards Tibet, Burma (present-day Myanmar), and Vietnam.

Today, Kunming is a distribution and export hub for Pu'er tea worldwide, as well as hosting specialized fairs and markets that attract international buyers. The city serves as a global showcase of Yunnan's cultural and agricultural wealth, reinforcing the province's identity as the birthplace of some of the most prized teas on the planet.

Pu'er as a premium product

Currently, Pu'er tea occupies a prestigious place in the fine tea market. Many connoisseurs compare it to rare wines, as it can be aged for decades, developing complexity and smoothness over time. Examples produced from centuries-old trees in Yunnan – called "mother trees" – fetch astronomical prices at specialized auctions, reflecting not only their rarity but also the cultural reverence surrounding this tradition.
