Moscow condemns new US attack on speedboat near Venezuela.
In a conversation with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, he warned of serious consequences from Washington's military escalation in the Caribbean.
247 - The foreign ministers of Russia and Venezuela expressed, in a telephone conversation, deep concern about the military actions of the United States in the Caribbean Sea, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. This news was originally published by RT Brasil.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Venezuelan Minister Yván Gil spoke on Sunday (5) and stressed that the growing US military presence in the region represents a significant risk to the stability and security of the continent. “The escalation of Washington’s actions in the region could have far-reaching consequences for the region,” says the official note from the Russian Foreign Ministry.
During the dialogue, Lavrov was categorical in condemning the new attack perpetrated by US forces on October 3, when a Venezuelan ship was targeted in international waters near Venezuelan territory. According to the Russian Foreign Minister, "Moscow strongly condemns the new attack perpetrated by the US Army on October 3 against a ship in international waters near Venezuela."
The Russian Foreign Ministry also reiterated that the American action constitutes a violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty, stressing that episodes like this “increase military tension and threaten regional peace.” Moscow and Caracas reinforced the importance of cooperation between the two countries to guarantee maritime security and defend the principle of non-intervention.
The incident, which occurred under the administration of US President Donald Trump, was met with outrage by allies of Venezuela and Russia, who see Washington's stance as an attempt at geopolitical intimidation and military pressure on sovereign governments in Latin America.
Russia and Venezuela maintain a close strategic and military partnership, and both countries have denounced the increase in US naval and air operations in the Caribbean as part of a policy of containment and threat. Lavrov's position reinforces Moscow's alignment with Caracas in the face of what they describe as "provocative actions" by the United States.
