247 - At the initiative of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who holds the rotating presidency of BRICS, a virtual meeting of the bloc's leaders took place this Monday (8). The meeting lasted about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The debate was marked by a context of increasing global political and economic instability. In this scenario, the BRICS member countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism and advancing proposals for reforming international institutions, seeking a more representative and inclusive global system.

Defense of the Global South and international trade

The leaders agreed on the urgency of promoting a more just and balanced international order, capable of reflecting the ongoing transformations. Another central point of the meeting was the negative impact of unilateral measures, especially on global trade, which threaten the development of emerging nations. In this sense, the expansion of solidarity, political coordination, and trade relations among the countries of the bloc was advocated.

Preparation for multilateral meetings

The meeting also served as preparation for three major international events that will take place in the coming months: the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, starting on September 23; COP30 in Belém, starting on November 6; and the G20 Leaders' Summit, scheduled for November 22 and 23.

International participation

The summit was attended by officials from several countries: the leaders of China, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, and South Africa; the Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates; the Foreign Minister of India; and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Ethiopia.

The BRICS reaffirmed its willingness to actively contribute to peace, the defense of multilateralism, and the search for collective solutions to global challenges, consolidating itself as a key player in international geopolitics.
