Fiocruz warns of a surge in Covid-19 cases in four states.
Increases are seen in Amazonas, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rio Grande do Sul.
Agência Brasil/EBC - The Infogripe Bulletin from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), released today (10), shows an increase in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) caused by covid-19 among the adult population of the states of Amazonas, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo.
The cases with laboratory confirmation for the Sars-CoV-2 virus refer to epidemiological week 44, from October 30 to November 5, and with data entered into the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Gripe) up to November 7.
According to the coordinator of InfoGripe, Marcelo Gomes, the updated bulletin alerts the country to the spread of the disease, following the confirmation of... increase in Amazonas last week.
"In the update, we observe not only the continuation of this trend in the state of Amazonas, but also in three other states. It is important to remember that the laboratory results data are partial, the information is still incomplete in relation to the recent scenario, and even so, it was possible to observe an increase in confirmed cases."
Gomes explains that, in the coming weeks, updated data will provide a more concrete overview of the changing pandemic landscape.
"Since laboratory data takes longer to enter the system, it is expected that the number of cases in recent weeks will be higher than observed in this bulletin, and the number of states in this situation may even increase."
According to him, it is not yet possible to link the increase in cases to the identification of new sub-lineages of the coronavirus, recently identified in Amazon and Rio de Janeiro.
Seasonality
The researcher also explains that COVID-19 has shown a tendency to have annual seasonal peaks in Brazil, unlike other respiratory diseases, such as... influence or the flu, which appear more frequently in the country only during the winter months.
“Different from Influenza "Like other respiratory viruses that typically have a peak each year, COVID-19 may be heading towards a reality where we have to live with two periods of increased circulation."
Brazil recorded an increase in Covid-19 cases between May and June 2022, following the strong wave seen in January and February. Currently, Fiocruz indicates an increase in hospitalizations for respiratory illnesses among people aged 18 and older, and in Rio Grande do Sul, in the age group of 60 and older.
According to Infogripe, in the last four weeks, the prevalence of cases with a positive laboratory test for respiratory viruses was 14,8%. influence A; 0,5% for influence B; 26,1% for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); and 36,9% for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). "Among the deaths, the presence of these same viruses among the positive cases was 10,4% for influence A; 0,0% for influence B; 0,0% for RSV; and 74,6% Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19)”, informs Fiocruz.
