State Government - The state of Paraná registered an 18% decrease in the number of intentional homicides (those with intent to kill) in 2013, compared to the previous year. There were 2.575 occurrences last year, compared to 3.135 in 2012. The result followed the downward trend seen in the partial reports, released every three months, by the Public Security Secretariat.

“This difference corresponds to 560 lives saved. And, if we compare it to 2010, the reduction is even greater: 21,40%. This achieved rate reflects the set of actions that the current Public Security administration has been putting into practice and demonstrates that we are on the right track,” says the Secretary of Public Security, Cid Vasques.

The numbers show a reduction in the rate of intentional homicides in various regions of the state. The capital city showed a decrease of 11,22% in this type of crime, while in the Curitiba Metropolitan Region the drop was even greater: 19%.

The same was observed in the Integrated Public Security Areas of Paranaguá (-4,49%); Ponta Grossa (-4,04%), São Mateus do Sul (-48,65%), Guarapuava (-8%); Pato Branco (-19%); Francisco Beltrão (-19,23%); Cascavel (-30,2%); Foz do Iguaçu (-28,5%); Toledo (-34,38%); Campo Mourão (-21,43%); Maringá (-24,7%); Rolândia (-43,08%); Londrina (-42,61%); Telêmaco Borba (-22,58%).

The commander of the Military Police, Colonel César Vinícius Kogut, highlighted that the good performance is also linked to the commitment and investments made by Governor Beto Richa. “The current administration is investing more and more in public security, providing the necessary resources for the Military, Civil, and Scientific Police. With good management at the head of the Public Security Secretariat, these resources are channeled into well-planned actions, which has contributed to the reduction in homicide rates and other crimes,” he assessed.

Since drug trafficking is linked to a large proportion of intentional homicides, Public Security has been working diligently to combat drug trafficking, with joint operations between the police and also in partnership with other agencies in the sector.

“The Civil Police have been working tirelessly to combat crime, and as a result, we have achieved positive results collectively. The arrest of small-time drug dealers is essential for reducing crime rates, as many of them are also murderers. The new, large, and powerful patrol cars, and the hiring of more police officers, have also contributed,” says the Chief of the Civil Police, Riad Braga Farhat.
