Death toll rises in clash with police following prison break in Paraná.
The number of deaths in a confrontation with the Military Police (PM) following a mass escape at the Piraquara State Penitentiary (PEP I) in the early hours of Sunday (15), in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, has risen from four to five; this information comes from the State Secretariat of Public Security and Penitentiary Administration (Sesp-PR); in total, 28 prisoners escaped from the prison after an explosion that opened a hole in the unit's wall - 23 are believed to be on the run.

The information was given to G1, this Tuesday (17), by the State Secretariat of Public Security and Penitentiary Administration (Sesp-PR).
In total, 28 prisoners escaped from the prison after an explosion that opened a hole in the unit's wall - 23 are believed to be on the run. According to the Paraná State Penitentiary Department (Depen), inmates at the Piraquara Detention Center started a riot, drawing the attention of the Military Police and prison guards. There was an exchange of gunfire between police and prisoners.
Three incidents occurred on Sunday – two during the escape, and the third hours later. The third body had not yet been identified by the Forensic Medical Institute (IML), and therefore the death had not yet been announced. The identification took place this Tuesday.
Two other inmates were killed in a confrontation with the Military Police this Monday (16) in Quatro Barras, also in the Metropolitan Region.
