Hydroelectric power plants operated by Cemig are auctioned off for R$ 12,1 billion.

The federal government raised R$ 12,1 billion with the auction of four hydroelectric plants operated by Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig). The auction was held today (27) at Brasil, Bolsa, Balcão (B3), formerly BM&F Bovespa, in the center of the capital of São Paulo.

The first lot, the São Simão hydroelectric plant in Goiás and Minas Gerais, was won by the Chinese group Spic Pacific Energy PTY, the only bid offered, for R$ 7,18 billion, a premium of 6,51%.

The Engie Brasil Minas Geração Consortium won the bid for the second lot, relating to the Jaguara hydroelectric plant in Minas Gerais and São Paulo, for R$ 2,17 billion, a premium of 13,59%.

The Engie Consortium also won the bid for the third lot, the Miranda hydroelectric plant in Minas Gerais, for R$ 1,36 billion, a premium of 22,42%.

The last lot, in Volta Grande, Minas Gerais and São Paulo, was won by Enel Brasil SA, with a premium of 9,84% and a value of R$ 1,4 billion. All contracts have a term of 30 years.

The funds raised will be used by the government to try to balance this year's budget, which is projected to have a deficit of R$ 159 billion.

The winning bidders offered the highest notification value for the concession, respecting the minimum value for each power plant.

Protest

Outside, labor unions protested against the auction. During the event, some demonstrators managed to enter the B3 (Brazilian Stock Exchange) and held up signs opposing privatization. They argued that the auction would hand over national assets to foreigners, which would lead to higher electricity bills.
