The Barrageiro Public Market expands options for farmers and consumers in Foz do Iguaçu.
The new social market strengthens family farming and generates income for small producers, consolidating the market as a space for shopping and leisure in the city.
247 - The Barrageiro Public Market in Foz do Iguaçu offers new product and gastronomic options for residents and tourists. Among the new additions are a stall with fruits, vegetables, and legumes, as well as Casa da Colônia, a restaurant serving homemade food and afternoon tea. Both are managed by the Association of Family Rural Producers of Foz (Aproffoz).
The initiative, supported by Itaipu Binacional and Itaipu Parquetec, is part of the market's social stalls, aimed at associations and cooperatives. According to the space's management, the expansion reaffirms the commitment to valuing small producers and to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially those dealing with food security and sustainable economic growth.
"We are very pleased with this opening, which confirms our commitment to making the Public Market a space for family farming. Visitors gain another option for quality products, and producers gain a new business opportunity and income generation," said Enio Verri, Brazilian Director-General of Itaipu.
Diverse mix
For Yuri Benites, Director of Tourism at Itaipu Parquetec, the arrival of the social fruit and vegetable stall fulfills a plan that has been in place since the market's inception. "Our market was designed to offer a diverse mix, with family farming as the beating heart of this environment," he explained. "Today, we celebrate the opening of this stall, the result of collaborative work between the market management, the association, and the producers."
In addition to Casa da Colônia and the new fruit and vegetable stall, the market already houses two other social stalls: one dedicated to handicrafts, managed by the Mothers' Club, and another from Coaffoz, focused on organic products from the cooperative.
Colony House and agroecological food
Casa da Colônia offers a varied and affordable homemade buffet, with different dishes each day, side dishes, salads, and desserts. In addition, two juices made with seasonal fruits are among the beverages served.
The products sold in the produce section follow the principles of agroecology, prioritizing crops grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. The aim is not only to offer healthier and more nutritious food, but also to promote the autonomy of family farmers and the preservation of natural resources.
