247 - The Curitiba Jury Court begins, this Tuesday (11), the trial of Jorge Guaranho, former prison police officer accused of the homicide of municipal guard and treasurer of the Workers' Party (PT), Marcelo Arruda. The case, which gained national repercussion due to its political context, will be conducted by Judge Mychelle Pacheco Cintra Stadler, of the Special Court of the Jury of the Central Forum of Curitiba. The information is from the portal Metropolis.

Marcelo Arruda was murdered on the night of July 9, 2022, during his 50th birthday party in Foz do Iguaçu (PR). The event, held at a club, had the PT (Workers' Party) as its theme and made several references to then-presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Around 23 p.m., Jorge Guaranho, a declared supporter of former president Jair Bolsonaro, stormed the celebration and, after an argument with Arruda, shot him. According to witnesses, Guaranho shouted "this is Bolsonaro territory, damn it!" before firing. Marcelo tried to fight back, but succumbed to his injuries. He left behind four children, including a baby just over 40 days old.

Initially, the trial was to take place in Foz do Iguaçu, but it was transferred to Curitiba after the defendant's lawyers abandoned the courtroom in April 2024. In September of the same year, Guaranho was granted house arrest and began to be monitored by an electronic ankle bracelet.

In an interview with MetropolisPamela Silva, widow of Marcelo Arruda, stated that she expects the maximum sentence for Guaranho. “Every time, it’s that feeling that now it’s going to happen. Now it’s going to happen, now we’re going to get justice,” she declared. “I believe that the community, society, the population of Curitiba, the jurors will truly understand what happened and will judge. Because Guaranho did indeed kill.”

She also expressed hope that the court's decision would be strict. "I believe the people of Curitiba will give him the maximum sentence," she added.
