Paraná 247 – Professor and lawyer Luiz Edson Fachin has been nominated by President Dilma Rousseff as the new Justice of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). If his name is approved by the Senate, he will fill the vacancy left by former court president Joaquim Barbosa, who retired last year.

Fachin has previously worked as a lawyer for social movements, such as the MST (Landless Workers' Movement), and has the support of the PT (Workers' Party). Recently, he also received the support of PSDB (Brazilian Social Democracy Party) senator from Paraná, Alvaro Dias. "The competent and non-partisan jurist from Paraná, if nominated, will enhance the Supreme Court of the country. He has our full support and the certainty that his presence on the Supreme Court will honor the Brazilian judiciary," the parliamentarian said in a statement.

Dilma recently consulted the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL), about Fachin's name. The PMDB member, who had shown resistance, lessened his rejection and stated that he would work for the approval of the jurist's name in the Senate. In the Senate, the president's nomination goes through a hearing and will need to be approved by the plenary in a secret vote.

Edson Fachin, a lawyer, is a professor of Civil Law at UFPR (Federal University of Paraná) and a founding partner of the law firm Fachin Advogados. Since 2010, when he was considered by former President Lula to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Eros Grau, the lawyer from Paraná has been on the lists of candidates for the court. He holds a law degree from UFPR (1980), a master's and doctorate in law from PUC-SP (Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo), a post-doctorate in Canada, is a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg (Germany), and a visiting professor at King's College London.
