Vaccari's sister-in-law may be imprisoned by mistake.
Federal Judge Sérgio Moro, responsible for the Lava Jato Operation investigations, requested an expert analysis of the videos used by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office to justify the arrest of Marice Corrêa de Lima, sister-in-law of João Vaccari Neto. Yesterday, Moro extended Marice's temporary detention, based, among other evidence, on security camera footage provided by Banco Itaú in São Paulo at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office. According to the agency, the recordings show Marice making deposits at an ATM in the name of Giselda Rousie de Lima, her sister and Vaccari's wife. However, Marice's defense stated that the person filmed making the deposits is Giselda herself. According to the defense, the sisters are very similar physically.
Brazil Agency - The Federal Police (PF) will conduct an expert analysis of the videos used by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) to justify the arrest of Marice Corrêa de Lima, sister-in-law of the PT's suspended treasurer, João Vaccari Neto. The request was made today (22) by federal judge Sérgio Moro, responsible for the investigations of Operation Lava Jato in the first instance.
Yesterday (21), Moro extended Marice's temporary detention, based, among other evidence, on security camera images provided by Banco Itaú, in São Paulo, at the request of the Public Prosecutor's Office. According to the agency, the recordings show Marice making deposits at an ATM in the name of Giselda Rousie de Lima, her sister and married to Vaccari. The transfers were made on March 2 and 6.
After the video was released, Marice's defense team stated that the person filmed making the deposits is Giselda. According to the defense, the sisters are very similar physically. Although the arrest was not ordered solely based on the images, Moro requested that the identity of the person filmed be clarified.
In the decision ordering the arrest, the judge stated that the images left no doubt that it was Vaccari's sister-in-law.
"According to photos presented in court by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office, the resemblance is striking, leading this Court to conclude that it is the same person. Subsequently, Marice's defense attorney argued that the person in question is Giselda herself, as they are very similar. If this is the case, there is a change in the premises that led the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office to request preventive detention. It is true that, in part, it only involves a possible transfer of responsibility for the alleged wrongdoing, but for Marice the issue is quite relevant," said Moro.
In a petition submitted to the judge, prosecutors stated that the Federal Police will conduct an expert analysis of the videos to verify the identity of the person appearing in the images.
"Considering the physical resemblance between the suspect Marice and her sister, Giselda, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office was informed that the Federal Police Superintendency in Paraná will conduct an audiovisual analysis of the videos and images that formed the basis for the request to convert the temporary detention into preventive detention," the prosecutors stated.
According to investigations, Marice received money from money launderer Alberto Youssef, at the request of construction companies, to be delivered to the Workers' Party (PT). She is also suspected of having income and assets incompatible with her earnings. According to the investigation, in 2013 she bought an apartment for R$ 200, then backed out of the purchase and sold the property to OAS for R$ 400. The courts suspect fraud in the transaction.
