247 - Chosen to report in the Senate on the nomination of lawyer Luiz Edson Fachin to the Supreme Federal Court, Senator Álvaro Dias (PSDB-PR) will recommend the approval of his name for the Court. Dias stated that the lawyer meets all the constitutional requirements to fill the vacancy in the Supreme Court left by the retirement of former Justice Joaquim Barbosa.
"He is a brilliant lawyer with an exemplary life trajectory. He deserves to have his name approved by the Senate," Dias told Folha.
The toucan was one of the sponsors of Fachin's nomination to the Supreme Court. Both are from Paraná, the senator's home state. Dias even sought out the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros (PMDB-AL), to defend the lawyer's nomination.
Behind the scenes, the PMDB party is threatening to vote against Fachin's nomination in a sort of retaliation against President Dilma Rousseff. Renan even stated to associates that no nomination bearing the "PT's fingerprints" would be approved by the Senate.
The PMDB party may reject Fachin's nomination to demonstrate its strength to the Presidential Palace. Renan Calheiros was irritated by the replacement of his political protégé Vinícius Lages in the Ministry of Tourism with Henrique Eduardo Alves, without Lages being appointed to other government positions. The Senate president has been on a collision course with the Presidential Palace since his name was included on the list of politicians investigated by the Federal Police's Operation Lava Jato.
Álvaro Dias stated that it would be an "injustice" to use Fachin's nomination as a political response to the president. "It would be very unfair to retaliate against the president by discrediting someone with respectability in the legal field," he said.
