247 - The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), is trying to convince the public on his social media that the almost 300% increase in his salary, his vice-governor's, and his secretaries' salaries will be necessary to "attract and retain the most competent people in the state's technical staff" after "15 years of freezing" these salaries.

The proposed salary adjustment was presented to the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais at the request of the governor himself, who is a candidate to succeed Jair Bolsonaro on the national stage.

If approved, the salary of the governor of Minas Gerais will increase from R$ 10,5 to R$ 41,8, phased in over three years: R$ 37,5 starting April 1st; R$ 39,7 in February 2024; and R$ 41,8 in February 2025.

"For more than 15 years, the salaries of state secretaries have been frozen, a situation incompatible with the position," said Romeu Zema, defending his own salary increase.
