247 - The vice-governor of Minas Gerais, Paulo Brant (PSDB), declared his vote for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in the second round of this year's presidential election. This democratic stance differs from that of his running mate, Governor Romeu Zema (Novo). who declared support for Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Brant stated that he voted for Simone Tebet (MDB) in the first round and that the choice to support Lula in the second round was due to the fact that the Workers' Party candidate has the "best conditions to safeguard our democratic system" because of the "diversity of his alliance."

Zema's deputy also warned that Bolsonaro's candidacy "has been captured by a radical far-right, which truly threatens our democracy" and that "maintaining democratic institutions is what matters at this moment."

"Only democracy can restore our hope of building a true nation, prosperous, united, just and peaceful. Long live democracy! Always," Brant concluded.

Despite being running mates, Brant and Zema have not had a good relationship for some time. The vice-governor broke with his allies and left the Novo Party, migrating to the PSDB, where he ran again in this year's elections on the ticket of his party colleague Marcus Pestana. In retaliation, Zema dismissed Brant's entire team in the vice-governorship in August.
