Toxic gas leak kills woman and suspends classes in the interior of São Paulo state.
According to the mayor of Pontal, some patients had to be transferred to other cities due to the high demand for medical care in the municipality.
Agency Brazil - A toxic gas leak killed a 38-year-old woman and left at least two people in serious condition last night (4), in Pontal, in the interior of São Paulo. The city hall made a sports gym available so that residents of the affected neighborhoods would not remain in the region during the night.
According to Mayor José Carlos Neves, some patients needed to be transferred to other cities because of the high demand for medical care in the municipality. According to him, at least 70 people sought health services, with five remaining hospitalized this morning (5). Two people had been intubated yesterday.
Suspended classes
Due to the gas leak, the Pontal city hall suspended all public services, including classes in the public and private school systems. Services are expected to resume tomorrow (6).
According to the mayor, the causes of the accident are being investigated. In a live broadcast this morning, he said that among the hypotheses is that the gas is composed of chlorine or ammonia.
The city hall released a statement informing that analyses in the Campos Elíseos neighborhood, where the leak occurred, did not indicate contamination of the water system.
