UFRJ awards honorary doctorate to Martinho da Vila.
In a solemn session of the University Council this Tuesday (31), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro will grant the title of honorary doctorate to the singer, composer and writer Martinho da Vila; the initiative came from the Department of Vernacular Letters of the Faculty of Letters and was unanimously approved; according to the opinions, Martinho da Vila “became a mediator between popular and erudite culture, which enhanced his role in promoting popular culture and in the fight against racism in Brazilian society”
Rio 247 - The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) will award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to singer, composer and writer Martinho da Vila next Tuesday (31). For the occasion, a solemn session of the University Council will be held at 15 pm, at the Faculty of Letters, on Ilha do Fundão.
The tribute to Martinho da Vila originated in the Department of Vernacular Letters at the Faculty of Letters. All opinions were unanimous in granting the title to the artist. The document approved this year by the University Council states that Martinho da Vila “became a mediator between popular and erudite culture, due to his bi-cultural qualities as a popular master and an idol of the cultural industry, which enhanced his role in promoting popular culture and in the fight against racism in Brazilian society.”
