TRE-RJ denies candidacies of Witzel and Garotinho.

Considered ineligible, former governors Anthony Garotinho and Wilson Witzel are seeking to run for the Chamber of Deputies and the government of Rio de Janeiro, respectively.

Agency Brazil - The panel of the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) rejected the candidacies of former state governors Anthony Garotinho (União Brasil) and Wilson Witzel (União Brasil). Both decisions were unanimous, but an appeal to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) is still possible. Witzel is running for governor of the state and Garotinho for the Chamber of Deputies.

Garotinho remains ineligible because he was convicted by the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) for electoral corruption and by the state's Court of Justice (TJRJ) for administrative misconduct.

Wilson Witzel was sentenced to the loss of his position as governor by the Special Mixed Court in April 2021 for crimes of responsibility related to fraud in the purchase of equipment and the signing of contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to 13 years, 9 months, and 20 days in prison for corruption, criminal association, suppression of documents, and coercion committed during the 2016 electoral process. He remains ineligible to run for office due to having suffered [a further penalty]. impeachment in 2021 and cannot hold any public office for five years.
