Tragedy and grief: wife of police officer killed in Rio speaks about irreparable loss.
'We had a whole life ahead of us, full of plans that are now turning into longing,' lamented Rosi Correa.
Power Agenda - The wife of civil police officer Rodrigo Veloso Cabral, 34, made a statement on social media after the death of the officer, who had been in the force for only two months. He was shot during the mega-operation in the Alemão and Penha complexes, this Tuesday (28), and did not survive.
"You were my first and only great love, my best friend, the husband who made me feel like the most loved and secure woman in the world. We had a whole life ahead of us, full of plans that now turn into longing," Rosi Correa wrote on her Instagram profile.
She also posted a photo alongside Rodrigo and their daughter. “What comforts me most is knowing the kind of person you were at home. The best father our daughter could have had. A loving, present father who taught with patience, who played with a child's energy, and who looked at her with a pride that lit up his face. She was his world, his greatest love, and she felt it in every gesture of yours. I look at her, and I see your light, your smile, your strength.”
Rodrigo's body will be laid out for viewing at 14 PM at the Memorial Cemetery in Rio, in Cordovil, in the North Zone. The burial is scheduled for 16 PM.
Beloved fan
The police officer was a Botafogo fan and attended games with his family. On social media, the "Nobody Loves Like Us" Movement, a group of fans that organizes parties for the club, posted a tribute.
"Another citizen residing in Rio de Janeiro has died in the endless war that the state of Rio is experiencing. We wish strength to the family and offer all the love of our people to the wife," he said.
Dead police officers
Rodrigo was assigned to the 39th Precinct (Pavuna), which covers the Chapadão and Pedreira complexes. He is one of the four officers killed in the operation. Also killed were:
Marcus Vinícius Cardoso de Carvalho, 51 years old – known as Máskara, recently appointed head of investigations at the 53rd Police Station (Mesquita). His wake is being held at the Cacuia Cemetery, on Ilha do Governador. The burial will be at 13:30 PM.
- Cleiton Serafim Gonçalves, 40 years old – member of BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion).
- Heber Carvalho da Fonseca – also a member of BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion)
- Five civilian police officers and 10 military personnel were injured in the clashes.
The operation
The operation mobilized approximately 2,5 agents from the Civil and Military Police, with support from the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office, to execute 100 arrest warrants and 150 search and seizure warrants. The targets were leaders of the Comando Vermelho gang operating in 26 communities within the Alemão and Penha complexes.
During the offensive, 60 suspects were killed. However, on the morning of this Wednesday (29), residents of the community removed more than 70 bodies from a wooded area in Penha, according to the Human Rights Commission of the OAB-RJ.
The bodies were taken to São Lucas Square, on João Lucas Road, one of the main roads in the region. According to witnesses, the dead were found during searches in the Serra da Misericórdia, where the clashes were concentrated on Tuesday night. Residents claim that there are still bodies in Vacaria, another area of conflict.
Blocked roads
Criminals blocked and set fire to roads in retaliation for police action.
On the Grajaú-Jacarepaguá Highway, which connects the North and Southwest zones, a truck and a bus were used as barricades, forcing drivers to turn around and drive against traffic at around 13 p.m.
About 30 minutes later, a section of Rua Dias da Cruz, in Méier, was also blocked off by obstacles placed by criminals.
According to Rio Ônibus, buses were used as barricades in several areas of the city, including Anchieta, Méier, Avenida Brasil, Linha Amarela, Cidade de Deus, Chapadão, Engenho da Rainha, Alemão, and Penha. More than 100 lines had their routes rerouted.
