Shooting leaves one dead in favela in Rio's south zone.

One person died after a shootout this Saturday (23) in Morro da Babilônia; neighboring the Leme neighborhood, the community has been the scene of frequent clashes and received an integrated operation by security forces two days ago.

By Vinícius Lisboa, reporter for Agência Brasil - One person died after a shootout today (23) in Morro da Babilônia, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. Neighboring the Leme neighborhood, the community has been the scene of frequent clashes and received an integrated operation by security forces two days ago.

According to the 19th Military Police Battalion (Copacabana), criminals from rival factions exchanged gunfire in the community around 8 am this Saturday.

A man was injured on Rua do Rosário, one of the main streets in the favela, and received medical attention. Another man who was shot was also taken to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries.

Integrated operation
Neighboring communities, Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira, were the target of an integrated operation on the morning of June 21st, for encirclement, stabilization, and removal of barricades.

1.800 members of the Armed Forces, 50 military police officers, and 2 teams of military firefighters with dogs were employed, supported by armored vehicles, aircraft, and engineering equipment.

The operation had the support of the Navy, since the communities are located in Leme, a neighborhood on the coast of Rio de Janeiro.

A report released on the operation indicated that two people were arrested by agents. Additionally, sniffer dogs indicated a location in the woods where human remains consistent with human remains were found.

Some of the ammunition, magazines for automatic weapons, and bulletproof vests seized were found in an old bunker that belonged to Fort Duque de Caxias, located in Leme. The hideout was in dense forest.
