Since 2010, families and civil society organizations have become aware of the medicinal properties of cannabis. In 2015, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) authorized the importation of these products into the country.

The poorest segment of the population still faces difficulties accessing medications approved by Anvisa (the Brazilian health regulatory agency). Cannabis-based medicines cost an average of R$1.500 per month, depending on the dosage prescribed for the patient.
