Rio 247 - The acting president of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), Minister Humberto Martins, denied a habeas corpus petition filed by former Rio de Janeiro governor Sergio Cabral. Arrested on November 17th as part of Operation Calicute, Cabral is accused of receiving monthly payments of up to R$ 850 from the construction companies Andrade Gutierrez and Carioca Engenharia.

The information is Estadão Column.

"In the appeal requesting his release, Cabral's defense argued that the decision of the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region (TRF2) was not properly justified, and further maintained that there were no grounds for maintaining the former governor's imprisonment."

But Minister Humberto Martins concluded that there were no flaws in the decision. "The arrest warrant is duly justified, so the case under analysis does not fall within the exceptional circumstances that would allow for the request to be granted on an urgent basis," he emphasized.
