247 - Federal deputy Rogério Correia (PT-MG), in an article published in the newspaper GGN This Sunday (9), he comments on the relationship between the ongoing environmental tragedies in Minas Gerais and the decimation of public policies to contain these events by the state governor, Romeu Zema (Novo), and Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

In recent days, Minas Gerais has seen a Rock falls onto tourist boats. in Capitol, a dike overflow, floods in a wide variety of locations and now, 138 cities in Minas Gerais are in a state of emergency. There is even a risk of dam collapses.

According to Correia, the mining companies' profits in the state take precedence over the safety of the population. "Tragedies in Minas Gerais are reminiscent of Vale's crimes and show that Bolsonaro and Zema have decimated environmental policies. Residents of Ouro Preto and Mariana, who were injured in Vale's crime during the Samarco dam collapse, recall the recent past with apprehension. Congonhas, Barão de Cocais, Nova Lima, etc... In short, wherever there are dams and predatory mining, the situation is critical. The Velhas Basin has dams with a high risk of collapse, such as Capitão do Mato, Mina do Pau Branco, Cachoeirinha, Maravilha II, and Dique Lisa, which has already collapsed, destroying sections of the BR-040 highway and affecting the lagoons that supply water to the RMBH (Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte). The damage will be incalculable."

"The reports from the Brumadinho Parliamentary Inquiry Commissions in the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais and the Chamber of Deputies already warned of these risks, but the profits of mining companies in collusion and government negligence speak louder. Legislation has been changed, mandating decommissioning and imposing high fines on those who do not respect the new safety standards. But current government policies are running counter to the new state legislation and the recent national dam safety law, which imposes fines of up to 2 billion reais," he added.

The parliamentarian requested reinforcements for the solidarity campaigns to help the miners. "The priority now is to strengthen the solidarity and campaigns that have been launched by church pastoral groups, universities, unions, and social movements. But we will maintain oversight and accountability, a commitment expressed since the beginning of our mandate."
