Newborns can leave maternity wards in Rio de Janeiro with their ID and CPF (Brazilian tax identification number).
This initiative is the result of a partnership with the Rio de Janeiro Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran) and aims to combat the under-registration of births and guarantee the citizenship of newborns.
247 - Newborn babies in the state of Rio de Janeiro can now leave maternity wards with their identity card and CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID). The service was made available by the Rio de Janeiro Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran). The stations were strategically opened within the maternity wards themselves to facilitate the general registration of children. The project guarantees the first issuance of these documents in a faster and free manner.
Currently, Rio de Janeiro has eight centers spread throughout the region authorized to provide this service: Maria Amélia Maternity Hospital in the city center; Mariana Bulhões Maternity Hospital in Nova Iguaçu; Rocha Faria Municipal Hospital in Campo Grande; Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital in Realengo; State Mother's Hospital in Mesquita; Heloneida Studart State Women's Hospital in São João de Meriti; Azevedo Lima State Hospital in Niterói; and Alexander Fleming Maternity Hospital in Marechal Hermes.
The Alexander Fleming Maternity post was opened on Tuesday (20). The objective, like the other units, is to combat the under-registration of births in the population and guarantee the citizenship of babies born in the territory. One of the mothers served at the Alexander Fleming post, teacher Jaqueline Cardoso, was very satisfied with the speed of the process in a single location.
“I was very happy to learn about this Detran program here at the maternity ward, because the child leaves with their general registration and identity card - CPF. This is the guarantee that she exists as a citizen. Without an identity card and CPF we are nothing, it's the person's registration. Knowing that my little daughter will leave with this registration is very gratifying for me,” said Jaqueline.
In addition to these eight units in operation, Detran intends to open three more this December. “On Thursday (22), a Detran-RJ post will be inaugurated at Hospital dos Lagos, in Bacaxá, Saquarema. On the 27th, it will be the turn of Hospital Municipal Pedro II, in Santa Cruz. And on the 29th, Hospital Maternidade Herculano Pinheiro, from the Rio municipal network, in Madureira, Detran anticipated.
