PT defines exit from Cabral government: February 28th

"The relationship will be friendly, but it will depend a lot on the PMDB, which has repeatedly acted in a truculent manner. The PMDB will have their candidate and we will have ours. We are not working with the hypothesis of an alliance with the PMDB. These are candidacies in different camps," said Senator Lindbergh Farias, the PT's pre-candidate for governor of Rio; the PT in Rio de Janeiro met this Saturday and decided that on February 28th it will hold an event to formalize its departure from the PMDB government, relinquishing the positions it holds.

Rio 247 - The PT (Workers' Party) leadership in Rio de Janeiro met this Saturday and decided that on February 28th it will hold an event to officially withdraw from the PMDB (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party) government, relinquishing all positions held. The meeting took place this morning in the auditorium of the Bank Workers' Union (downtown Rio) with the presence of the national president of the PT, Rui Falcão, and the leadership decided to firmly support the candidacy of Senator Lindbergh Farias for governor of the state.

Rui Falcão said that a national alliance with the PMDB cannot ignore local issues, such as in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, where the partners in the Planalto Palace will be on different platforms.

"We are not breaking with the PMDB. Unlike in other states where the PMDB took the initiative, we are presenting our own candidate. Our expectation is that the national alliance will continue to advance," said Rui.

Despite Governor Sérgio Cabral's low popularity, according to Rui, the PT will not omit its participation in the PMDB governor's administration during Lindbergh's campaign. "We have a legacy that we will defend as important for the people of Rio de Janeiro. In the same way that we will defend the federal investments made here in Rio de Janeiro."

The Workers' Party (PT) holds two top-level positions in the Rio de Janeiro state government: Environment, headed by former minister Carlos Minc; and Social Assistance and Human Rights, headed by Zaqueu Teixeira. However, according to the state president of the PT, Washington Quaquá, the party has between 600 and 700 positions in the government as a whole.

According to an article on the Folha de São Paulo website, faced with pressure from the national PMDB party on the PT party to force Lindbergh to withdraw from the race in favor of supporting Vice-Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão, the PT senator considered Saturday's meeting "a victory."

"The relationship will be friendly, but it will depend a lot on the PMDB, which has repeatedly acted in a truculent manner. The PMDB will have their candidate and we will have ours. We are not working with the hypothesis of an alliance with the PMDB. These are candidacies in different camps," said Lindbergh.

The Workers' Party senator believes that in a possible second round, he would be the only candidate capable of beating former governor Anthony Garotinho (PR). His optimism is based, according to him, on electoral polls and popular rejection of the PMDB government.

"We are the force capable of uniting a large bloc to prevent Garotinho's victory. And Garotinho's victory, for me, would be a setback for Rio de Janeiro."
