Sputnik - The city of Rio de Janeiro announced this Friday (31) the start of phase 5 of the COVID-19 pandemic easing, allowing sea bathing and street vendors to work on the beaches.

However, beachgoers are still prohibited from staying on the sand, and street vendors are allowed to work from 7 am to 18 pm, without renting chairs and tents and without selling alcoholic beverages.

Mayor Marcelo Crivella had declared earlier this month that beachgoers should only be allowed to stay on the sand after a COVID-19 vaccine is available. The Undersecretary of Sanitary Surveillance, Márcia Rolim, however, stated today that it is possible to authorize access before a vaccine is available during the pandemic.

Furthermore, the reopening of private schools has been confirmed, which can be done on a "voluntary" basis. The return to classes in public schools has not yet been scheduled.
