The soldier's defense claims that Marco Aurélio's father tried to assault him during the hearing; the young man was killed by a gunshot at point-blank range in the southern zone of São Paulo.
247 - Military police officer Guilherme Augusto Macedo, accused of killing medical student Marco Aurélio Cardenas Acosta, 22, in November 2024, has asked the court to impose a precautionary measure against the young man's father. This information was released by [source name/source - context needed]. Metropolis this Monday (July 29). According to the request, filed last Friday (July 27), both Macedo and fellow police officer Bruno Carvalho do Prado, who participated in the same action, claim to fear for their physical safety after an incident that occurred during a court hearing.
The defense for the military police officers reports that, in a hearing held on the 10th, the doctor Julio Cesar Acosta Navarro, Marco Aurélio's father, verbally insulted Macedo, calling him a "murderer" and a "coward," and attempted to physically assault him. According to the document, the police officer had to be restrained by agents responsible for the escort. "The victim's father insulted and attempted to assault the defendant Guilherme Augusto Macedo and had to be restrained by the police officers who were providing the escort," says a section of the petition presented to the court. "Given what has been narrated, fearing for his physical integrity, the Defense requests that Your Excellency apply precautionary measures against the witness, so that he does not approach the defendant, for the aforementioned reasons."
The incident that led to Marco Aurélio's death occurred on November 20, 2024, at the entrance of a hotel in Vila Mariana, in the southern part of São Paulo. The young man was shot at point-blank range by Guilherme Macedo while unarmed and cornered. According to the investigation, Marco Aurélio had slapped the rearview mirror of the police car, which initiated the chase. During the approach, he was kicked in the abdomen and grabbed the leg of police officer Bruno Prado, who fell to the ground. At that moment, Macedo fired the shot. The entire action was recorded by the officers' body cameras.
After the hearing, Julio Cesar released a letter recounting his reaction upon seeing the police officers for the first time since his son's death. “I saw them at the back of the room, somewhat hidden and apart, almost withdrawn because of their size, seated near the judge, separated from me by several other seated people, two uniformed soldiers with berets, whom I thought must be Guilherme Augusto Macedo and Bruno Carvalho do Prado. I immediately moved towards them, but suddenly several people stood up and prevented my advance, there was a commotion and shouting, and my own lawyers took me out of the room,” the doctor wrote.
The case generated strong public outcry and reignited the debate about the excessive use of force by law enforcement officers, especially in police encounters involving unarmed young people.
