Brazilian Federal Police arrest Dutch woman with cocaine at Galeão Airport.
A 21-year-old Dutch student was arrested by the Federal Police at Galeão Airport in Rio de Janeiro while attempting to board a flight to Brussels with nearly 2,5 kg of cocaine. Based on the information she provided, the Federal Police arrested two Ecuadorian men, aged 56 and 40, responsible for delivering the drugs to the Dutch woman. All were charged with international drug trafficking and, if convicted, could face sentences of five to 15 years in prison.
Douglas Correa, from Agência Brasil - The Federal Police (PF) arrested yesterday (11) a 21-year-old Dutch student with almost 2,5 kilos of cocaine, when she tried to board a flight to Lisbon, at Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport - Antonio Carlos Jobim. The owners of the drug were also arrested at a hotel in the Lapa neighborhood, in the central region of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
Late Friday night, federal police officers stationed at the airport police station identified a suspicious suitcase during a baggage check in the hold. The X-ray equipment detected the presence of an organic substance, which normally results in the seizure of narcotics.
The passenger, who was already in her seat awaiting takeoff on a plane bound for Brussels, Belgium, was removed from the aircraft. Upon opening her suitcase, the police found the cocaine hidden in a false bottom. The suspect was scheduled to disembark in Lisbon.
Based on information provided by the detained woman, the Federal Police went to a hotel in the traditional bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and arrested two Ecuadorian men, aged 56 and 40, responsible for delivering the drugs to the Dutch woman. In their statements to the police, the two did not disclose the origin of the seized drugs.
They were all caught in the act of international drug trafficking and sent to the prison system in the state of Rio de Janeiro. If convicted, they could face sentences of five to 15 years in prison.
