247 - Actions by Rio de Janeiro police seek criminals responsible for the increase in violence in the metropolitan region. This Thursday (12) the Military Police began an operation in the Nova Brasília favela, in Niterói, which involved 200 men from three Battalions and the Shock Battalion. In Morro da Coruja, in São Gonçalo, the Civil Police carried out another operation in search of drug traffickers and the person responsible for murders and robberies in the region. The PM command says it will create a cordon in the region to combat crime and the plan against violence will be detailed this afternoon by the Secretary of Security, José Mariano Beltrame.
A suspect died in the confrontation in Niterói, in the Nova Brasília favela. Police also raided two drug packaging points in São Gonçalo. They were searching for members of a gang believed to be responsible for vehicle theft, home robberies and the deaths of victims in Niterói. They believe that the killer of Sergeant PM Celso de Jesus, killed last Monday (9) at a gas station, could also be at the location. Celso de Jesus was killed after reacting to a robbery at a gas station.
Young Jorge Luiz Carvalho, 24, died after being shot during an attempted robbery in Ingá on April 1st. A day earlier, doctor Carlos Vieira de Carvalho, 65, was killed when he arrived home in Niterói.
According to the Institute of Public Security (ISP), in February of this year the number of robberies of commercial establishments increased by 38%. Robberies of residences rose by 285%, while vehicle theft increased by 71%, and robberies of pedestrians by 13%.
