Oil tanker hits port in Santos, injures Navy officer and damages three other vessels (video)
The Olavo Bilac ship was built for transporting oil and has a gross tonnage of 114 tons.
247 - An oil tanker struck a pier (a structure extending into the sea and used for docking) during a maneuver in the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. Three vessels suffered damage. The Olavo Bilac tanker was built for transporting oil, has a capacity of 114 tons of gross tonnage (GT). It is 249 meters long and 43 meters wide, being the third of a series of five Aframax vessels ordered by the company from the Atlântico Sul Shipyard (EAS). The information was published in G1 Portal.
According to the Santos Port Authority (APS), the vessel Olavo Bilac had operated at the Alemoa 1 quay on Wednesday (12) and, around 23:20 pm, was on its way to the Outeirinhos 1 quay. But it had a problem with the rudder (instrument used to steer the ship) and collided with the Brazilian Navy pier.
The ship, loaded with 50 tons of fuel oil, was towed to the Alemoa 1 dock, where it awaits inspection by the São Paulo Port Authority. The Port Authority reported that, in addition to the pier, three Navy vessels docked at the site suffered damage: the ships Guajará, Guaporé, and Maracanã.
In a statement, Transpetro reported that the accident was a consequence of a rudder malfunction on the ship Olavo Bilac. The company stated that there was no cargo spill, the injured person suffered minor abrasions and has already been released.
