He was a construction worker, but lost his job because of the coronavirus crisis. His wife sold her cell phone to buy food.

“I’m unemployed and paying rent. The landlord gave me a break but asked me to pay the household bills, the water bill. I can’t access unemployment benefits because I filled something out incorrectly and the offices are closed, nothing can be resolved,” he lamented. The accounts were published in Buzzfeed Brazil.

Severino Franco, 38, from the Rocinha Association of Culture, Art and Sport (ACER), reported several problems that prevent residents of the favela from quarantining. "There's the doorman, the cleaning lady, and if a person doesn't go to work, they lose it. This is a moment that shows us the social disparity between the favela and the city."
