Rio de Janeiro has surpassed China in the number of deaths due to the new coronavirus. The "Letter from the City of Rio de Janeiro in Defense of Life" presents an overview of the serious health, economic, social, and political crisis we are experiencing, indicates the need to build a democratic and popular non-partisan program to overcome Rio's problems, and points out immediate measures to be taken by the public authorities. The document's central focus is the defense of life through social isolation policies and the socioeconomic protection of vulnerable sectors, as indicated by Fiocruz and UFRJ.

The document is signed by leaders of popular movements, artists, intellectuals, and parliamentarians such as councilman Reimont, federal deputy Marcelo Freixo, federal deputy Benedita da Silva, federal deputy Jandira Feghali, federal deputy Alessandro Molon, actress Camila Pitanga, actor Wagner Moura, actress Letícia Sabatella, writer Conceição Evaristo, theologian Leonardo Boff, diplomat Celso Amorim, actress Dira Paes, and others.
