247 - The number of deaths from Covid-19 in the state of São Paulo could be 71% higher due to the relaxation of quarantine measures, estimates a group of researchers from the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV).

According to the group's calculations, there would be 5.500 more deaths in São Paulo by the first week of July if the quarantine were not relaxed.

With the gradual reopening of businesses and other easing measures, there would be, in addition to the 5.500 deaths, another 10.300 deaths by the first week of July, due to the increased speed of the virus's spread.

The total number of reported deaths in the state would thus reach 24.900, researchers say. This is a 71% difference from the 14.600 deaths they predict would occur by the beginning of July without reopening, reports the journalist. Ricardo Balthazar in Folha de S.Paulo.
