Brazilian Supreme Court justices point to Tarcísio's "vassalage" to Bolsonaro and the US after the September 7 attacks.
The governor of São Paulo adopts a "Bolsonaro above all" stance, with an eye on the 2026 elections.
247 - The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos), reinforced his political subservience to Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in a speech on Avenida Paulista, on Sunday (7). According to Andréia Sadi, from g1Ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) assessed that the gesture is equivalent to an informal slogan of "Bolsonaro above all," interpreted as a sign of subservience in seeking the former president's support for the 2026 presidential race.
Tarcísio has radicalized his discourse against the Court, especially against Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of investigations involving Bolsonaro and his allies. At the event, the governor called Moraes a "tyrant," a statement that generated a strong reaction in the Supreme Court, including among magistrates who until then maintained a good relationship with him.
Electoral strategy and behind-the-scenes maneuvering.
The interpretation among Supreme Court justices is that Tarcísio has gone for an "all or nothing" gamble by explicitly aligning himself with Bolsonaro, aiming to consolidate himself as the right-wing candidate in 2026. They believe this move is not limited to submission to Bolsonaro, but also symbolizes "vassalage" to the United States, which imposed tariffs with a direct impact on the São Paulo economy in reaction to Bolsonaro's trial by the Supreme Court.
Behind the scenes, Tarcísio's allies confirm that his pre-candidacy is already underway, in an arrangement led by the president of the PP party, Ciro Nogueira. A close source stated: "He's already a candidate. The operation is in progress. The biggest resistance isn't from Jair, but from federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP). But it will be forced down their throats, because the centrist bloc is fully behind him."
Dispute over the vice-presidential candidate and possible party directions.
According to centrist leaders interviewed by the portal, the choice of vice-presidential candidate is still open. If the presidential candidacy is confirmed, Tarcísio is expected to migrate to the PL party, as Valdemar Costa Neto indicated in an interview last week. In this scenario, the vice-presidential slot will be negotiated between the PP and União Brasil parties, which form a federation.
The speech on Paulista Avenue also reinforced Tarcísio's alignment with the agendas defended by Bolsonaro supporters, such as amnesty for those investigated for the acts of January 8, 2023. The governor's presence at the event solidified the perception that he has definitively adopted the persona of a national candidate.
The political offensive, however, has provoked negative reactions among Supreme Court justices, who see the move as a risk of institutional tension and a clear sign that Tarcísio is willing to radicalize in search of space in the presidential race.
