"The biggest tragedy in the region's history," says the mayor of São Sebastião about the rains that have already left more than 35 dead.

247 - The mayor of São Sebastião, Felipe Augusto (PSDB), stated that the heavy rains affecting the North Coast of São Paulo have impacted 100% of the municipality. By early Monday morning (20), 36 deaths had already been confirmed and, according to the mayor, the number of victims is expected to rise, as many residents are buried due to landslides. “There has never been a situation like this. We are talking about the biggest tragedy in the region's history,” the mayor told the newspaper. The Globe.  

When questioned about the damage caused by the rains, Felipe Augusto emphasized that “the situation is so serious that we cannot yet estimate it. I can say that 100% of the city was affected. The most affected area was Vila do Sahy, due to the number of human losses. A large part of the neighborhood was destroyed. Between 40 and 50 houses disappeared.”

Rescue operations in coastal municipalities are being carried out by more than 130 teams, with the support of 23 vehicles and seven aircraft, which are concentrated in the Barra do Sahy and Camburi region, in São Sebastião. Another 80 police officers will reinforce the activities from this Monday (20). The action is supplementary to the actions of the Municipal Civil Defense. 

On Sunday (19), the Army Command authorized the use of troops and equipment from the Southeast Military Command to provide aid to the affected cities. 

The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas (Republicanos), decreed a state of public calamity for 180 days in six cities in São Paulo due to the heavy rains that hit the North Coast of São Paulo. The decree includes the cities of São Sebastião, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabela, Ubatuba, Guarujá and Bertioga.
