The decision, delivered by Judge Antonio Celso Cortez, highlighted that the victim was injured while participating in a peaceful protest, when military police officers threw stun grenades at the demonstrators, hitting her with shrapnel from a device that exploded near her feet.

The amount will still be updated with interest and inflation adjustments.

The defense presented by the São Paulo state government, which claimed that the soldiers acted in legitimate self-defense, with proportional and progressive use of force in strict compliance with their legal duty, was not accepted by the judge, who stated that governments have a duty to guarantee the safety of people participating in peaceful and legitimate protests.

The young woman also stated that she was harassed and publicly shamed after the incident, and that the protest in question was peaceful.
