Rio 247 - Federal deputy Jandira Feghali (PCdoB-RJ) condemned the culture of machismo in Brazil which, according to her, was responsible for the massacre that resulted in the death of 13 people at a New Year's Eve party in Campinas (SP), in the early hours of Sunday (1).

"Some say that Feminism leads to nothing, some say that there is no sexism in Brazil, but this sexism killed Isamara Filier, a child, eight other women and three men," the congresswoman said on her Facebook page.

Jandira also defended the Maria da Penha Law, which expanded the network of protection for women and toughened punishments for aggressors, described by Sidnei Ramis de Araújo, the perpetrator of the massacre, as a "slutty Maria da Penha law". "I was the rapporteur for the Maria da Penha Law and I traveled to every corner of this country; wherever I went there were reports of aggression of various forms and magnitudes. It is unacceptable that the discourse of machismo finds an echo in the 21st century," she posted.

"Now is the time to strengthen the Maria da Penha Law and make it an increasingly powerful instrument for defending women throughout Brazil. We cannot accept any more deaths resulting from misogyny and intolerance. We will fight to the end for the enforcement of the Maria da Penha Law!" she concluded.

The perpetrator of the massacre, Sidnei Ramis de Araújo, 46, had revealed in text messages to friends his plan to kill his ex-wife, Isamara Filier, and "as many sluts in the family as possible together." Araújo killed, in addition to his ex-wife, the couple's 8-year-old son. They were in the process of separating and disputing custody of their son. After committing the massacre, Sidnei killed himself with the weapon used to commit the crimes.
