Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes ordered the release of four people arrested last month by the Federal Police in Operation Câmbio, Desligo. In the operation, the Federal Police are investigating a corruption scheme that operated through money launderers in Rio de Janeiro.
The individuals under investigation, Rony Hamoui, Paulo Sérgio Vaz de Arruda, Athos Roberto Albernaz Cordeiro, and Oswaldo Prado Sanches, benefited from the minister's decision. According to Gilmar Mendes, the accused can respond to the charges while free because there was no violence or serious threat in the alleged criminal conduct. All were arrested by order of federal judge Marcelo Bretas.
Operation Câmbio, Desligo dismantled a scheme for moving illicit funds in Brazil and abroad. The operations were of the "dólar-cabo" type, a form of parallel movement, bypassing the banking system, involving the delivery of cash, payment of bills, and the buying and selling of commercial checks.
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), the involvement of money launderers was necessary to handle funds embezzled during Sérgio Cabral's administration as governor of Rio de Janeiro.
