One of the sons of funk singer Tati Quebra Barraco was killed in the early hours of today (11), supposedly in a shootout with police in Cidade de Deus, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. The region experienced violent conflicts between drug traffickers and police about three weeks ago.

Yuri Lourenço da Silva, 19, was in the company of another man, identified as Jean Rodrigues de Jesus, 22, when the shootout with police officers from the Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) in the community occurred.

According to UPP police officers, a group of military police were conducting a routine patrol in the streets of the community when they were allegedly met with gunfire from armed drug traffickers near Quintanilha Street.

According to the Pacifying Police Unit, the two men killed were carrying pistols and a large quantity of marijuana and cocaine. They were taken to Lourenço Jorge Hospital in Barra da Tijuca, also in the western zone, but died upon arrival.

Family members accused the police of shooting the young men. The funk singer, who was performing a show in Minas Gerais when she received the news, spoke out on social media. "The police took a piece of me that will never be filled. The police killed my son. This pain will never heal," Tati Quebra said via Twitter.

On her Facebook profile, the singer expressed the depth of her grief: "My son: it's hard to believe, you know? How must it be for you to receive a message, a call in the middle of a show saying that your son is dead? Don't ever want to go through what I'm going through. Don't ever want to feel what I'm feeling... I know that only the Lord is capable of filling this void that I will carry for a long time, perhaps forever. No words, Yuri, Mom will love you forever!"
