FecomercioSP: Household debt reaches its lowest level since 2021
Credit cards appear as the main form of debt, followed by personal loans.
247 - Household debt in São Paulo reached its lowest level since August 2021 in January. According to the Federation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP), the percentage of indebtedness in the last month fell to 62,7%, below the 69% recorded in the same period of 2024.
Currently, around 2,7 million families in São Paulo have overdue bills. Credit cards appear as the main form of debt (83,1%), followed by personal loans (14%), mortgage financing (13%), and installment plans (11,8%).
Despite the decrease in indebtedness, the average time families spend committing to debt rose to 7,6 months, and the share of income allocated to debt repayment increased in January to 29,8%. According to the federation, the rate is still considered healthy, but indicates a greater dependence on credit to balance the budget.
