With two months to go until the end of 2011, the Crime Reporting Hotline has already broken the record for calls in a year. By Wednesday night (19), 123.960 reports had been registered in Rio de Janeiro, surpassing the previous record reached in 2004, with 123.914 calls.
The anonymous tip line functions as a tool to assist the police in the search for criminals and to prevent crimes. The largest reward offered by the program to date was R$ 11.000, an amount paid for the capture of Heloísa Borba Gonçalves, the Black Widow, sentenced to 18 years in prison for aggravated homicide.
