Rio de Janeiro – The Federal Revenue Service announced today (3) that approximately 800 tons of counterfeit or unfit-for-consumption goods will be destroyed this week. The products, seized during Revenue Service operations at the Port of Itaguaí, in Baixada Fluminense, began to be destroyed this Tuesday, National Day to Combat Piracy.

This is the 12th National Destruction Campaign and is being carried out in 75 different locations across the country, for the destruction of approximately 5.300 tons of goods. The seized products correspond to approximately R$ 282 million in tax assessments, constituting a record among campaigns already carried out by the Federal Revenue Service.

According to the head of Customs at the Port of Itaguaí, Alexandre Miguel, clothing and sneakers are the items most frequently seized at the Port of Itaguaí. However, the inspector said that seizures "have been decreasing, thanks to the continuous work" of the agency.

He explained that the shredded material is incinerated by a company contracted through a bidding process. "Materials harmful to the population and public health are destroyed and incinerated. Those that are not harmful are donated or auctioned for recycling."

Finally, the inspector explained that when a product is suspected of being counterfeit, Customs contacts the office responsible for the brand in the country to verify the authenticity of the material.
