Brazilian congressman wants to replace image of elderly person hunched over on road signs.
According to the project, the replacement of the signs will be done whenever there is a need for replacement or creation of new signage.
247 - Representative Paulo Fiorilo has filed a bill that mandates replacing the image of a person bent over with a cane in parking spaces, seats, queues, and other areas providing priority services to the elderly with an image of a person standing upright with the sign "60+".
The goal is to gradually combat prejudice against the elderly, known as ageism, which is deeply rooted in today's society.
"It (prejudice) is present through expressions, treatment, actions, and even traffic signs. Today, the pictograms used in signage indicating priority services for this population contain symbolism that can be seen as pejorative, associating characteristics of fragility with them. We want to put an end to this once and for all," the congressman explained.
