Rio de Janeiro – The implosion of 1.050 meters of the Perimetral Elevated Highway, initially scheduled for the 17th, will now take place on the 24th. The news was announced today (7) by the mayor of the capital, Eduardo Paes. The reason for the postponement, according to him, is to better prepare the structure for the implosion.

In order to allow the works, Avenida Rodrigues Alves will be closed on Thursday (14). The road passes under the elevated road and is one of the main roads in the port area. The road connects Avenida Brasil and the Rio-Niterói Bridge to the city center and receives heavy traffic, mainly buses and trucks.

Traffic will be diverted through internal roads, and several bus lines will have their routes rerouted; changes will be communicated to users. The implosion of the Perimetral Elevated Highway is necessary for the implementation of the Porto Maravilha project, which includes the construction of two tunnels, already under advanced construction, and the implementation of a Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) system, as well as a network of cycle paths.

Where port warehouses currently stand, a tree-lined promenade will be created, with the aim of revitalizing the entire area degraded by years of neglect and heavy vehicle traffic.
