Crivella invents a fee for medical students in Rio.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella (PRB), announces a measure that will impact the city's municipal hospitals; he intends to charge private medical universities R$ 960 per month for each student who completes a 40-hour weekly internship in the city's hospitals; this expense, not foreseen by the universities, is causing schools to transfer students to state hospitals, which will worsen the service conditions of municipal hospitals.

Rio 247 - The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella (PRB), announces a controversial measure: the municipality intends to charge private universities in Rio R$ 960 for each medical student who does an internship in Rio hospitals, according to information from... Radar column, from Veja magazine

Published on July 21st, the measure was not approved by the City Council. Rio will be the only municipality in the federation to charge this fee.

Since the quota was not part of the universities' plans, some schools are already considering concentrating students in state and federal hospitals. This is expected to worsen the shortage of doctors in municipal hospitals.
