The heart carved into the Christ the Redeemer monument will be illuminated in blue for three nights, starting tomorrow (28). The action by the federal, state and municipal governments is part of the international campaign “Blue Heart”, developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with the aim of drawing attention to the issue of human trafficking.
The rector of the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, Father Omar Raposo, says that it is necessary to care for and protect human life. According to him, the illumination of the heart, which represents love, could lead society to reflect on the need to prevent new cases of human trafficking and slave labor.
This will be the second time this year that Christ the Redeemer will be used in a campaign against human trafficking. Between June 5th and 8th, days before the World Cup, a huge colorful box containing true accounts of trafficking cases was placed in a square next to the train that takes tourists to Corcovado. The action was part of the international Gift Box campaign.
