Rio 247 - A historic day for Rio de Janeiro and for Palestinians around the world. Starting at 18 pm this Thursday (28), Christ the Redeemer, one of the Wonders of the World, will be illuminated in the colors of the Palestinian flag, paying tribute to the Palestinian struggle for freedom, sovereignty and peace. The date is also significant because in 2018 the "Nakba" turns 70 years old.

The term is used by Palestinians to refer to the year 1948, in which more than 800 Palestinians were expelled from their homes and lands by the Israeli army, becoming permanent refugees without the legal right to return to their place of birth.

Brazilian journalist and columnist Lucia Helena Issa, from Brasil 247, was invited by the Palestinian embassy in Brazil to represent Brazilian women fighting for peace and will be at today's ceremony atop Christ the Redeemer.

Palestinian refugees, children and grandchildren of those who were expelled or killed in 1948, now number more than 6 million people, many still living in refugee camps such as Burh Al Burajneh, Sabra and Shatila, in Lebanon.

The Palestinians' struggle for freedom, respect for life, and peace is the struggle of all humanity.
