Cremerj revokes the license of anesthesiologist accused of raping a patient.
The court has not yet set a date for the trial of anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra.
Brazil Agency - The Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) decided to definitively revoke the registration of anesthesiologist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra. The sentence was determined unanimously during a plenary hearing held on Tuesday afternoon (28). The doctor was arrested in flagrante delicto on July 10 of last year, accused of raping a woman during childbirth in the surgical center of the Heloneida Studart Women's Hospital, in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense.
According to the Council, “The definitive revocation of the registration is the highest penalty, according to current legislation. With this, Giovanni Quintella Bezerra is completely prohibited from practicing medicine in Brazil.”
Prison
Giovanni Bezerra is in pre-trial detention, ordered by Judge Rachel Assad. In her decision, the judge draws attention to the seriousness of the act committed by the doctor, who did not even care about the presence of other professionals beside him in the operating room.
“Such was the audacity and intent of the detainee to satisfy his lust that he committed the act inside a hospital, in the presence of the entire medical team, in the middle of a surgical procedure. Therefore, not even the presence of other professionals was able to dissuade the prisoner from the repugnant action, which took advantage of the victim's absolute vulnerability, a condition over which the perpetrator maintained exclusive control, since he administered sedatives in doses that ensured the absolute inability to resist,” the magistrate highlights in the decision.
Rachel Assad further emphasized the complete disregard shown by anesthesiologist Giovanni Bezerra "for the dignity of women, for medical ethics, and for the professional commitment he had made not long before."
“In a childbirth where the woman, in addition to being anesthetized, was giving birth to her child – in one of the likely most important moments of her life – the detainee, taking advantage of his profession, violated all the rights she had over herself. Therefore, the day of her child's birth will be marked by the trauma resulting from the brutal conduct he committed, which will be remembered on every birthday,” the magistrate wrote.
The court has not yet set a date for the anesthesiologist's trial.
