247 - The Special Committee responsible for the impeachment request against the governor. Wilson Witzel The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) resumed the 10-session countdown for the defense, this Monday (6).
On the 24th of June, The committee had approved the suspension of the deadline.The proposal came from rapporteur Rodrigo Bacellar (Solidariedade), to whom the governor proposed the position in the Government Secretariat, and it was approved unanimously. The decision was reversed by Monday's session.
At the time, Witzel's lawyer, Manoel Peixinho, celebrated the decision. "From now on, the Alerj (Rio de Janeiro State Legislative Assembly) has respected the right to defense and a fair process begins. This decision, with the suspension of the deadline, gives us peace of mind to work based on a technical and fair defense. As it stood, the entire process could have been annulled," Peixinho stated. At Monday's meeting, the deputies also decided to include in the process the initial petition of the Operation Favorito complaint and the decision of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), in the request for search and seizure carried out in May at addresses linked to the governor.
