247 - A joint operation by the Labor Public Prosecutor's Office (MPT) and the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) rescued, in Mairinque (SP), a worker kept in conditions analogous to slavery after accepting employment via OLX, an online sales platform, said the Labor Public Prosecutor's Office in a statement released on Friday (5).

The man, who had come from Bahia, lived in precarious accommodations, without a work permit, adequate food, or minimum conditions of hygiene and safety.

In light of the irregularities, a Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) was signed, which provides for the payment of R$ 14 in severance pay and compensation, in addition to the obligation to guarantee decent working and living conditions. The employer will also pay for the worker's return to his hometown and may be held legally responsible for the crime of reducing someone to a condition analogous to slavery, while the Ministry of Labor issued infraction notices and ensured the rescued worker's rights to assistance and unemployment insurance, according to the statement.

According to prosecutor Gustavo Rizzo Ricardo, the case highlights how digital platforms are being used to fraudulently recruit workers. "It is essential that monitoring and accountability also advance in the digital environment," he stated.
