Street carnival in Rio de Janeiro will have a decision in 10 days, says association leader.
The president of the street carnival association will have a meeting this Tuesday (January 4th) with the city hall.
Metropolis - The president of the Independent Association of Street Carnival Groups of the South Zone, Santa Teresa and Downtown São Sebastião (Sebastiana), Rita Fernandes, said this Tuesday (January 4th) that the holding of the Rio de Janeiro street carnival should be decided within ten days.
“We will meet today (Tuesday) to understand the situation, but a decision shouldn't be made today. According to the positions of the Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz, we should wait another ten days to make a decision,” said Fernandes.
Called by Fernandes, the meeting will include Mayor Eduardo Paes, the city's scientific committee, headed by Health Secretary Daniel Soranz, and nine representatives from small and large carnival groups in the city.
Given the increase in Covid-19 cases in Rio, Paes has been saying that "it is very difficult" to allow street Carnival this year. According to the mayor, the parades cannot be "of the traditional model". Fernandes has already stated that he will not hold Carnival "with restrictions" and "if there are risks to the population".
